Extract from 1901 census

The 1901 census shows a Bean family resident at Ling Common, Coltishall. There are three boys, Benjamin, George and Johnny. There were no Beans in East Harling. It is believed that the family moved from Hautbois to East Harling. Norfolk Roll of Honour for Hautbois lists three Beans as casualties, Benjamin, George and John.

Lieutenant PHILIP CHARLES RICHARDS MC Mentioned in Despatches 9th, South African Infantry who died age 33 on 12 February 1917. Son of Mrs. and the late Mr. P. C. Richards; husband of C. W. Richards, of Kimberley. Born in England. BARKLY WEST CEMETERY, North Cape, South Africa.
It is suggested that he gained his MC in the fighting around Kondoa Irangi, German East Africa.

In the First World War there was a RFC/RAF airfield at East Harling, original hangars and other buildings remain to this day. This explains the presence of several airmen in the local cemetery.
